Based in the small and friendly town of Budleigh Salterton, with fishing boats resting on the pebbled beach and cliffs facing inwards towards the bay, you are already in the depths of Devonshire country.
The South West Coast Path is Britain's longest National Trail, running from Minehead in Somerset to South Haven Point near Poole Dorset. For the bird enthusiasts among us, there is no better place to stay than right next to the Otter Estuary, which has been turned into one of Britain's most populated bird sanctuaries. Frequently a feeding and resting site for over-wintering birds, as well as a home to numerous species in the summer, it offers a valuable chance to to see beautiful birds in equally stunning surroundings.
With a viewing platform on the West side and a hide on the
East, the estuary reserve spans 57 acres of tidal mudflats
and saltmarsh.
